Weird day at work...

I don't talk about work much, ususally ... never, but today was a weird one.

Sometime this morning we got a weather announcement on the radio, tornado warning. As you know, a warning means that a tornado has been spotted. The storm capable of producing tornados was south and west of us by about 30 miles, and, of course, it was moving north and east.

We started evacuating people to the basement in both buildings. Everyone was cooperative, for the most part, and our plan worked well.

After we had everyone safely stashed away, me and another guy decided to make a last sweep through the upper floors. We stopped in a south facing room on the upper floor to peek out the window.

Now being from Southeast Texas, a place not known for it's tornados, I have never seen one. Today I think I saw the closest thing to a tornado you can see without actually seeing one. It was more than a little mesmerizing. The clouds were twisting and turning as they formed themselves into a rough V shape. The bottom portion continued to drop lower to the ground but never touched. It suddenly sucked back up into the clouds and then dropped again. After that, it began to break up a bit, but the swirling action was still going on.

Until today I was never able to understand the "storm chaser" mentality. A tornado forming is hard to take your eyes off of. It probably wasn't the best idea to be standing in front of a big glass window under those conditions though. But in my defense, it is hard to assess the situation from the basement. I was concerned for the safety of those we are there to protect and wanted the best information... that's my story and I'm sticking to it...
